What Is Radon?

Radon has been in the earth for as long as the earth has existed and can be found on the Periodic Table of Elements (RN-222). Radon is radioactive and once it enters a home or other building it can build-up to dangerous levels.  Radon causes lung cancer, and in this country alone up to 22,000 people per year die from radiation exposure due to radon in their own homes and no other cause!  Many thousands more die from exposure to radon in combination with other radiation sources and carcinogens.  British researchers believe they've also found links to asthma, allergies, stomach cancer, liver cancer, leukemia and other illnesses.

Where Is Radon Found?

Radon is a colorless, odorless gas.  It occurs naturally in the soil and can travel for miles underground. Radon is a decay product of uranium in soil and occurs naturally in all 50 states and around the world.  Since radon travels through ground faults, fissures in the earth and in underground rivers and streams it is possible for one house to have dangerously high radon levels while neighboring houses have less.  Since our geology is dynamic, a house or daycare center with or without a radon problem one year can have the opposite next year.  Radon can occur sporadically and so every house and daycare center needs a radon test every yeRadon Sourcesar.  Radon can also be disbursed through water flowing from faucets and showers and some radon is present in certain building materials as well.

How Often Should I Test?

Because geology is dynamic (there is constant movement and change underground) and radon levels can very dramatically, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends periodic radon testing for safety.  ANNUAL radon testing is recommended to be sure your family is safe from cancer, asthma, allergies and other illnesses.  Radon test kits are so inexpensive you can afford to buy enough kits to test your home and the homes of your parents or adult children.  If your kids spend at lot of time with grandma and grandpa their house needs a radon test and/or radon monitor too.  Instead of annual testing you can install a radon monitor, also called a radon detector, in your home and theirs.  If your kids go to daycare in a home or daycare center you want to urge them to install a radon monitor or even donate one; it's that important to your children.  A radon monitor or radon detector displays current radon readings just like your thermostat displays current temperature.  A radon monitor or radon detector also sounds an alarm if the radon concentration in your home changes from safe to unsafe.  Every home, and daycare center should have a smoke detector, a carbon monoxide detector and a radon detector.  Make sure you have all three to make sure your family is safe.

How Great A Risk Is Radon?

It doesn't take much radon to be dangerous (see EXPOSURE CHARTS ).  Your family's health isn't just the main thing, its everything truly important and irreplaceable and radon testing  and radon monitoring is an excellent preventative health care value.  Children, babies and the elderly are at greater risk.  Don't risk the threat of cancer, leukemia, asthma, allergies or other illnesses, test your home now and every year.  If you have an office, den, exercise or playroom on the basement level, you and your children are exposed to even greater risk so order a radon test kit and radon monitor or radon detector TODAY.

Are We Sure Radon's A Problem?

Every serious scientist knows radon causes lung cancer. The best estimates of annual U.S. lung cancer deaths due to radon exposure and no other cause is 14,000-22,000 people per year:  The number of cancer cases which do not result in death are unknown. Only cigarette smoking causes more lung cancer deaths than radon and smokers and former smokers are at dramatically increased risk when exposed to radon.  In addition to lung cancer, researchers now believe radon exposure may be linked to asthma, allergies, stomach cancer, liver cancer, leukemia and other illnesses for which no exposure charts currently exist.

What About Other Radiation Exposure?

We're exposed to many sources of radiation on a daily basis such as radon, sunlight, televisions, computer monitors and others. Of these, radon is by far the largest single source and the easiest to control.  The average member of the US population receives 55% of their annual radiation dosage from radon!   Every house, daycare center and school needs a radon test every year or a radon detector and if high radon levels are found they must be reduced (mitigated.)

Real Estate Testing Overview

The EPA recommends that two short term radon home test kits be operated side-by-side for real estate transactions. EPA also recommends testing for radon in the home in the lowest level which is currently suitable for occupancy, since a buyer may choose to live in a lower area of the home than that used by the seller.

The radon real estate testing guidelines developed by the EPA have been developed specifically to deal with the time-sensitive nature of home purchases and sales, and the potential for radon device interference.

If You Are Selling a Home...

EPA recommends that you test for radon in the home before you put it on the market and, if necessary, lower the levels of radon. Save the test results and all information you have about steps that were taken to fix any problems. This could be a positive selling point.

If You Are Buying a Home...

EPA recommends that you know what the indoor levels of radon in any home you consider buying. Ask the seller for their radon home test results. If the home has a radon reduction system, ask the seller for the information they have about the system.

If the home has not yet been tested, you should request a test be performed for radon in the home.

If you are having a new home built, there are features that can be incorporated during construction to reduce radon dangers.

We offer a short-term radon test (charcoal), a long term radon test (alpha track), a radon in water test and a continuous radon monitor for your home.
